with Dr. Valérie Rhein
Sunday, September 6, 2026, 10:30 a.m.
Venue: Herrengrabenweg 50, Basel
The ketubah sets forth the husband’s financial obligations to his wife in the event of a divorce or upon his death. This marriage contract has been an integral part of Jewish law since late antiquity. At that time, it was an innovative institution designed to benefit women. What significance does the ketubah hold in the context of feminism and gender equality? And is the tradition of these colorfully illustrated marriage contracts still upheld today?
Dr. Valérie Rhein, a Judaism scholar, researches the religious practices of Jewish women. She serves on the board of the Interfaith Think Tank and co-founded Ofek in Basel, as well as the study day Jom Ijun mitgegründet.
